Scared of the FAA Medical Exam? Here is Why You Should Not Be

Don’t Let “Medical Anxiety” Ground You Before You Start

A lot of people dream of flying but get stuck on one specific step: the FAA Medical Certificate.

There is a common myth that you need to be an Olympic athlete or have perfect uncorrected vision to become a pilot. This is simply not true. At Vegas Aviation, we see students from all walks of life pass their medicals and go on to successful flying careers.

If you are holding back because you are afraid you won’t pass, here is the reality of the process.

What Actually Happens at the Exam?

The medical exam is not a surgery or an intense physical fitness test. It is a safety checkup. You will schedule an appointment with an FAA-authorized Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) right here in Las Vegas.

According to the steps we outlined on our New to Flying page, here is what you can generally expect:

  • Medical history review: The doctor will look over your past health history.
  • Vision and hearing checks: You need to see and hear well enough to fly safely (and yes, wearing glasses is usually fine!).
  • Basic physical exam: A standard health check to ensure you are fit to fly.

The goal of the exam is to keep the skies safe, not to find reasons to fail you. It is often quick and inexpensive.

Why You Should Do This First

We list getting your medical as Step 02 on your journey to becoming a pilot for a very good reason. It clears the way for your training.

Flight training is an investment of your time and money. Before you spend a dime on flight hours or ground school, you should know that you are eligible to be a pilot.

  • If you just want to fly for fun or solo, you typically need a 3rd-Class Medical.
  • If you want a career in the airlines, you should aim for a 1st or 2nd-Class Medical.

Getting this certificate early removes the worry. It lets you focus 100% on learning to fly.

Need Help Finding a Doctor?

There are several AMEs located in Southern Nevada. If you are unsure who to call or how to fill out the online forms, we can help point you in the right direction.

Don’t let fear of the unknown stop your aviation journey before it begins.

Contact Us at (888) 235-9834 or schedule your visit at our office at North Las Vegas Airport (KVGT). We can answer your questions and help you get started on the path to your wings.
